Medical Billing and Coding / Introduction (Part-Time)
Course Info
This class provides students with a background in medical insurance, billing and coding in medical offices and hospitals. This is an introductory class and is not intended to be a comprehensive program.
All students will explore the occupational area and learn the basics needed to seek entry level employment. However, students with a background in the health or insurance fields may have an advantage in finding employment because of their experience. Also, those already working in the insurance or medical field will learn additional skills which will enhance promotional opportunities and increase their marketability.
Students learn to use the International Classification of Disease (ICD-9) for coding diagnoses and Current Procedural Terminoloy (CPT-4) for coding procedures. AMA and HCFA guidelines and the use and proper completion of the HCFA 1500 with different types of medical reports is also covered.
In addition to class textbooks, students must purchase the CPT and ICD-9 manuals. (Manual prices are included in the estimated 'Books' total.)
Part-time courses are available to individuals at least 16 years of age who need technical training for new employment or for upgrading current job skills. Many courses are specifically for those already employed in a particular occupation; prior experience may be required. Students enrolled in another Hillsborough County school are eligible to enroll in classes provided they pay tuition.
