Course Info

DAY PROGRAM

 9 Months (900 Clock Hours)

Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8 am-2 pm
(This program begins three times a year.)

EVENING PROGRAM
Length:
 12 Months (900 Clock Hours)

Schedule: Monday-Thursday; 5 pm-9:30 pm
(This program begins each August and January.)


Basic Skills Exit Requirements
TABE Test Scores: 10th Grade Reading, Math and Language

Program Description
This program prepares students for employment in entry-level positions in the accounting field. Students develop bookkeeping principles that emphasize classifying, recording, summarizing numerical data and making computations to compile and keep financial records.

Classroom activities include the recording of day-to-day business transactions in journals, ledgers and other accounting forms. Accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, depreciation and financial statements for proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations are covered.

In addition, students learn to compute wages and salaries, social security taxes, income-withholding taxes, unemployment taxes and journalized payroll. They arrange computerized accounting systems that include departmental purchases, cash payments, sales cash receipts, payroll data, depreciation, and financial statement analysis.

Completers must be able to key 225 digits per minute on the calculator in order to receive a diploma.

Microsoft Office software packages are used in this program.

Students learn both manual and computerized accounting systems.

What computer-related skills are covered?
Students learn Automated Accounting by using QuickBooks, which includes departmental purchases, cash payments, sales, cash receipts, payroll data, depreciation, and financial statement analysis using the Excel Spreadsheet. Microsoft Office Suite is also utilized to aid in preparation of reports, presentations, and data management. 

What are the proficiency standards for the keyboarding and ten-key calculator?
Completers must be able to key 225 digits per minute on the calculator in order to receive a diploma.

Will the program specifically help me run my own business or enter into a partnership?
Yes. The Accounting Specialist program will be an asset to your own business or entering a partnership.

Are online classes available?
Yes, all of the Business & Marketing programs are partially online. Students are able to work on-campus and off-campus via the computer. All it takes is a computer and internet access from your home, a library or Erwin's HUB (our Media Center).

You can work on your current assignments, progress ahead of schedule, or catch up on a class. Assignments are uploaded and instructors communicate with you through e-mail.

Does this mean I don’t have to attend class?
No, you will still have to come to class.

Is job placement available upon graduation?
