Program Description
This program will prepare students for employment requiring the ability to visualize concepts and designs, and to document their implementation using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) methods.

Students will learn the use of hardware and software employed by professionals to present their design. Instruction includes preparation of documents for the construction process. The application of these advanced computer methods to specific occupational areas will be part of the student’s instructions.

The program initially introduces the student to board drafting and all basic drafting techniques before beginning extensive training in the use of computer assisted drafting techniques, Autocad, and Autocad Architecture. This program specializes in Architectural, Civil, and Structural drafting and includes an introduction to Mechanical drafting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the program?
The program is approximately 19 months in length; it is possible to begin working after completing 12 months of the program, through the Industrial Cooperative Education Course (ICE).

What is the earning potential in this field?
The entry level starting rate is approximately $12.00 - 17.00 per hour depending on the company; salaries can top $40,000 per year after 4 - 5 years experience .

Is artistic talent necessary in this field?
No, just a willingness to learn. A talent for drawing by hand is helpful, but not necessary, since most of the work is done on the computer.

Can handicapped individuals do CAD?
Yes, many companies have handicapped CAD operators working at the computer most of the day. This field is ideal for people who have difficulty standing for long periods of time or use a wheelchair. Individuals with limited hand movement use voice activated devices to control the computer.

Do students need previous drafting or computer experience?
Although prior experience is helpful and basic Windows operating skills highly recommended, many students enter the program with little or no experience with drafting or computers. A background in construction is useful, since the program is focused on the architectural, structural and civil fields within the construction industry.

Are younger students at any advantage in this field?
No, the average age student is 28 years old. Student ages range from 18 to late 60s. The demand for CAD operators is so great that companies generally are not concerned with ages of the employee; employers need people who are able to do the work.

Is freelance/contract drafting from my home a possibility?
Yes, it is possible. Generally, it is necessary to spend a few years working for a company before employees are qualified to work on their own. Some companies allow their employees to do some work at home.

Where have graduates found employment?
Graduates have been employed by McGill Engineering, Colwill Engineering, Inter Phase Construction, Architects Collaborative, Tele Systems, Biological Research Association, Reynolds Smith & Hills, Chas Griffin Engineering, Sota Drafting and many others.

Is job placement available upon graduation?
Advisory committee representatives and teachers provide students with guidance and recommendations.
