Medical Clinical Laboratory Technician Standards:

  • Possess a standard U.S. high school diploma or GED from a school accredited by an approved accrediting association
  • Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Scores: 11 in Reading, Language and 10 in Math OR meet TABE exemption (Refer to Admissions and Testing)

  • Criminal background check 
  • Random drug screenings

PLEASE NOTE:

Students entering all health programs with a clinical study requirement must submit to a criminal background check and random drug screenings at their own expense.

If problems arise with the results of either the criminal background check or the drug screening, students will not be permitted to attend the clinical portion of the program which then results in program non-completion. 

A history of felony convictions or substance abuse may adversely affect your ability to gain employment or take licensing exams in the medical professions. We encourage you to consider your personal history when making appropriate career choices.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Program Description
The Medical Clinical Laboratory Technician Program is an Applied Technology Diploma program which guarantees transfer of 40 credit hours statewide to any community or junior college offering the Medical Laboratory Technology A.S. degree program.  Students are part of a comprehensive competency based/individualized type of instruction. Students are prepared to become capable laboratory technicians who work in many areas of the medical laboratory including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and blood bank. The program includes an internship in an approved laboratory facility.

Employment/Career Opportunities
Graduates are qualified to take the MLT certification exam administered by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Graduates with an associate's or bachelor's degree from an approved accredited institution may take the MT exam administered by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).

Students have a number of career choices including hospitals, private laboratories, clinics, doctor’s offices, public health laboratories, and research laboratories.

Salaries
Salaries for graduates range from $14.51-$30.19 per hour.

What are a medical clinical lab technician's responsibilities?

Medical clinical laboratory technicians perform laboratory tests in the areas of Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, and Immunology. These tests check the makeup of blood, urine, tissues and other body fluids for indications and signs of disease to aid the physician in diagnosis and treatment.

What medical science courses are included in the curriculum?

Coursework includes Phlebotomy, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Immunology and Parasitology and an internship in an approved laboratory facility.

Is there much homework involved?
The program moves very quickly. There are reading assignments every night and quizzes almost every day.

Is there math computation involved in the medical lab technician program?
There is a considerable amount of math required in Chemistry. Problems are usually of the equation type and are practiced throughout the Chemistry course in order to give students time to understand and become proficient with these problems.

What type of person would enjoy working as a medical clinical lab technician?
Medical clinical lab technicians are problem solvers and like challenge and responsibility. They are accurate in task performance, reliable, work well under pressure and stress, and are able to finish a task and communicate well. They set high standards for themselves and expect quality in the work they do.

What are the licensure requirements for this program?
The program instructor provides students with information about the application process for the certification exam including the websites used to complete this process. Students choose one out of the two certification agencies (AMT or AAB).

The American Medical Technologists (AMT) www.americanmedtech.org , requires applicants to successfully complete an accredited MLT program and submit the appropriate application and fee. Numerous state-wide testing dates, times, and locations are available.

The American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), www.AAB.org requires applicants to successfully complete an accredited clinical laboratory training program and submit an application fee and a certification fee. The test is given four times a year at various Florida locations.

Once students have passed the exam they become certified and are eligible to apply to the State of Florida for their license. If students have completed the program and are waiting to take the exam, they may receive a temporary license to work in Florida. If students fail the exam, temporary licenses are immediately revoked. Students are allowed to retake the exam if they fail it the first time.

Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, St. Joseph's Hospital, Memorial Hospital, Brandon Regional Hospital, LabCorp, Florida Blood Services, Tampa General Hospital, South Bay Hospital, South Florida Baptist Hospital, Lakeland Regional Medical Center, and various doctors' offices and private laboratories.
