COURSE OVERVIEW

Program Description
The Plumbing Technology program is a combination of classroom instruction and shop experiences using state-of-the-art equipment with emphasis on the working skills students must master to become residential, commercial, and industrial plumbers.

The instructor guides students as they learn to install, maintain, and troubleshoot plumbing systems. Students utilize work-related modules that closely simulate the job conditions in this high-demand field. Students study plumbing codes, using tools safely and properly, residential/commercial new construction, water conditioning, backflow prevention, isometric drawings, water-heating and plumbing repairs. These skills make graduates competent and confident in successful plumbing careers.

What will I be qualified to do after graduation?
Graduates can start as experienced plumbing apprentices. As a graduate, you will understand the basics of reading blueprints, plumbing codes, layouts of new construction piping, and troubleshooting of existing plumbing.

There are many opportunities in all phases of plumbing in the Tampa Bay area.  Companies specialize in residential/new construction, commercial/new construction, and the service and repair business, as well as other opportunities all over the country.

What are the possibilities of starting my own business?
There are excellent opportunities for self-employment with 4-5 years of field experience, proper licensing, and a good business plan.

How do graduates get their contractor’s license?
All licenses now require 4-5 years field experience, written testimony of applicant’s ability by three contractors who know the applicant, and applicants must pass a master plumbing exam.

What is the earning potential in the local area?
Starting pay is $14.48-$21.28 per hour and $20-$25 per hour for those with experience who demonstrate initiative. Some service plumbers earn $75,000 to 100,000 yearly.

What are the physical requirements of the job?
Students must be able to bend, kneel, squat, climb, and lift 50 lbs.

Is job placement available upon graduation?
Advisory committee representatives and teachers provide students with guidance and recommendations.
